Just took delivery of a brand new Razer Lachesis, to replace my dying Logitech G7 cordless. And heres a few words i have to say about it: So far the mouse feels pretty good. I was half expecting something of similar quality to the Barracuda headset, a product so terrible i'd stick it straight back in its box and send it back. So i was pleasantly surprised when i opened the box and found a pretty decent bit of kit! As far as quality goes, it doesnt come close to the G7. But it feels really nice. The mouse is pretty light, and it glides really well on my Razer mantis control mat. This might not actually be so bad.. Stick the driver disk in the drive and install drivers. The driver control panel is.. interesting. Personally i prefer the Logitech setpoint software. nice, simple, easy to understand. an idiot could use it. which is fairly useful to be honest. But this Razer panel is different. I think theres a lot of thought gone into making things look cool, as opposed to usable. Not a particularly good move, if i'm honest. but hey ho, moving on. I was a little worried about buying a corded mouse, purely because my desk can usually be described as a shit tip. This isnt good for wires at all, and was the reason for me buying the G7. turns out changing batteries mid game is irritating too, but less so than having to untangle a cable from piles of cd cases and beer cans. However i've not had a problem with tanglies yet. Sure, i've only had it about 3 hours. but i'm staying positive for now. So far performance has been fairly impressive. The buttons have a very positive feel, the mouse is smooth and theres plenty of extra function buttons to keep fingers busy with. The right side buttons are proving a little tricky at the moment, probably my fault for having big hands. I'm sure i'll get used to it. After spending 10 minutes setting the mouse up, i had a quick game of Call of Duty 4 to see what the Lachesis can do. The shape of the mouse is going to take a little getting used to, but its nothing too major and i'd expect it with any new product. Lack of side scroll buttons is definatly a negative point and although the extra 3 side buttons over the G7 makes up the numbers, i cant help but think the side scroller was easier to use. again, probably due to the size of my hands. If you're not a freak, i'm sure you'll be fine. Need to have a little more play time before i can give an overall verdict, so watch out for an update to this review after i've had a few hours to play Crysis: Warhead. I'll snap a few pictures of the mouse too. So far i suspect its heading for an 8-9/10. Razer Lachesis is available from www.play.com priced at £47.99
UPDATE: Having problems that i just cant get around. the mouse has become jerky. movement is as smooth as a gravel beach. Cant put up with it, so its been shelved until somebody buys it, or theres new firmware released. Damn shame. |
